Fascia boards aren’t something most of us pay much attention to, but they quietly play a big role in protecting your home. Sitting just under the edge of the roof, fascias support the guttering and shield the ends of your roof timbers from the weather. Without them, rainwater would seep into the rafters, leading to damp, rot, and potentially expensive repairs.
Over time, fascias can become worn, weathered, or even start to rot. If yours are starting to look a bit tired, you might be wondering whether you should fit new capping fascia boards over the existing timber or remove and replace the fascias completely. The right choice will depend on the condition of your roofline and how long you want the solution to last.
A capping fascia, sometimes called over fascia, is a thinner uPVC board that’s designed to fit directly on top of the existing timber fascia.
Many homeowners go for capping fascias because they are cheaper than a full replacement, quick to fit, and immediately improve the appearance of the roofline. Once in place, the uPVC won’t rot, warp, or need repainting, so it’s a low-maintenance way to give your roofline a facelift.
The catch is that capping fascias only work if the timber underneath is still solid. If the wood is already rotting or damp, fitting capping fascia over the top just hides the problem for a little while. The rot will continue to spread underneath, and you’ll eventually need to replace the boards anyway.
Replacement fascia boards are full uPVC boards that completely take the place of the old timber. To install them, the existing boards are removed and the new fascias are fixed directly to the rafters.
Replacement fascias provide a fresh start. There’s no old timber left behind to cause problems, the boards give stronger support for the guttering, and modern systems are designed to work well with soffits and roof ventilation. They cost more upfront than capping boards, but they last much longer and give peace of mind that your roofline is properly protected.
The simplest way to decide is to check the condition of your existing fascias. If the timber is still sound and free from rot, capping fascia can be a quick and affordable upgrade. If the wood is soft, warped, or showing signs of damp, replacement fascias are the better choice.
You can think of it like this: capping fascia is a bit like putting a new cover on an old book – it looks neat from the outside, but it doesn’t fix any problems on the inside. Replacement fascia is like getting a brand-new edition – fresh, strong, and built to last.
Both capping and replacement fascia boards have their place. Capping works well if your roofline timber is still in good condition and you want a cost-effective refresh. Replacement fascias are the right choice if there’s any sign of rot or decay, as they give you long-term protection and a stronger, cleaner finish.
Whichever option you go for, modern uPVC fascia boards are available in a wide range of colours and finishes, from crisp white to anthracite grey and woodgrain effects. They don’t just protect your home from the elements – they also make your roofline look neat and well cared for, adding to the overall appearance of your property.

“Very impressed this time around!!! (disappointed with communication and delivery in first lockdown) and left a negative review which I updated after delivery. I can now understand all the good reviews before the pandemic. Still the cheapest by far and the products are spot on. I've just placed another order - Thank you keep up the good work” Jason Wright | ![]() |
