When you’re investing in a roof for a conservatory, carport, garden room or lean‑to, one of the first questions you ask is: How long will it last? Polycarbonate roof panels have become a popular choice because they’re affordable, lightweight, and strong — but their lifespan depends on several factors. With the right materials, installation, and care, a polycarbonate roof can serve you well for many years.
If you’re already browsing options, take a look at our range of polycarbonate roofing sheets here: https://www.plasticbuildingsupplies.com/polycarbonate-roofing-sheet
In typical UK conditions, most mid‑to‑high quality polycarbonate roof panels can last 10 to 20 years. Some premium panels with strong UV protection and proper installation can stretch even further — up to 25 or 30 years in certain cases. Of course, the lower end of that range is more common for thinner or budget sheets, or where installation or maintenance is compromised.
Look for panels with a built‑in UV protective layer or coating. This shield helps prevent yellowing, brittleness, and degradation from sunlight. Poor or missing UV treatment is one of the fastest ways panels lose their clarity and strength.
Thicker sheets, such as multiwall or twin wall constructions, are more rigid and resist impact or bending better than thinner single-wall panels. That extra strength helps them last longer, especially in areas with hail or heavy branches.
Even premium panels won’t perform well if they’re poorly installed. Gaps, improper seals, wrong fixings, or incorrect glazing bars can let in water or stress points. A well-sealed, well-installed roof means fewer weak spots, fewer leaks, and extended life.
If your roof faces direct sunlight for most of the day, heavy wind loads, or frequent storms, that wear and tear can accelerate ageing. Overhanging trees, moss, and debris can also scratch or damage the surface over time. Roofs in milder, sheltered spots tend to last longer.
The good news is polycarbonate roofing is relatively low-maintenance, but “low” doesn’t mean zero. Occasional cleaning to remove algae, moss, bird droppings, or grime is beneficial. Use soft brushes and mild detergent to avoid scratching. Don’t use abrasive tools or harsh chemicals.
Even durable materials show signs of ageing. Here’s what to watch for:
- Panels turning yellow, foggy or cloudy
- Cracks, splits or fractures in the sheets
- Water leaking in through joints or seals
- Panels that are warped, bowed, or no longer fit flush
- Loss of rigidity or unexpected flex when weight is applied
Yes. For many projects, polycarbonate roofing offers an excellent balance of cost, performance, and lifespan. It’s lightweight, cheaper to transport and install than glass or metal, and provides decent insulation. Plus, panels come in different tints (clear, opal, bronze) so you can optimize light and shading.
It’s rare for a roof to be completely maintenance-free, but polycarbonate roof panels come close. If you choose quality materials, install them well, and give them occasional care, you can expect 10–20 years of solid performance, possibly more with premium options and gentle conditions.
If your current roof is ageing or you’re just planning ahead, upgrading to good polycarbonate sheet systems is a smart decision. You’ll gain years of waterproof protection, light control, and a more modern, durable legacy roofline.
Polycarbonate is lighter, cheaper, and easier to install than glass. While glass has a more traditional look, polycarbonate is far stronger and shatter-resistant. It also provides good insulation and comes in tints to help control light and heat.
No, polycarbonate sheets are not designed to be walked on directly. They can flex and crack under pressure. If you need to access the roof for cleaning or repairs, use crawling boards or staging to spread your weight safely.
Yes, multiwall and twin-wall polycarbonate panels provide insulation by trapping air between the layers. This helps reduce heat loss in winter and can also cut down on heat build-up in summer.
The right thickness depends on your project. For greenhouses or small shelters, 4mm to 6mm sheets may be enough. For conservatories, lean-tos, or larger roofs, 10mm to 25mm multiwall sheets are recommended for strength and insulation.
Polycarbonate panels should be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid abrasive brushes or harsh chemicals, as they can scratch the surface. A simple clean a few times a year will keep them clear and extend their life.
Cheaper sheets without UV protection can yellow or become brittle after a few years. High-quality sheets with UV coating are designed to resist yellowing and maintain their clarity for much longer.
Like most lightweight roofing materials, polycarbonate can be a little noisier than glass during heavy rain. Choosing thicker sheets and ensuring correct installation can help reduce noise levels.

“Very impressed this time around!!! (disappointed with communication and delivery in first lockdown) and left a negative review which I updated after delivery. I can now understand all the good reviews before the pandemic. Still the cheapest by far and the products are spot on. I've just placed another order - Thank you keep up the good work” Jason Wright | ![]() |
