Unsure how often to clean fascias, soffits and gutters? Learn the best cleaning routine, seasonal tips, and how to protect your home from costly damage.
If you’re like most homeowners, you probably don’t give your fascias, soffits, and gutters much thought — until there’s a problem. They sit quietly at roof level, doing their job day in and day out. But over time, dirt, algae, moss, leaves, and even bird nests can build up, and suddenly you’ve got leaks, stains, or even damp creeping into your home.
Think of your roofline like the unsung hero of your property. The fascias support the guttering, the soffits keep your roof ventilated, and the gutters whisk rainwater away from your walls. Without a bit of care, they can go from tidy and protective to grubby and ineffective.
The good news? With a regular cleaning routine, you can keep them looking fresh and working properly — and save yourself from expensive repairs down the line.
Fascias are those long boards that run along the roofline, right under the tiles. Because they’re so exposed, they’re prone to staining, algae growth, and general weathering. White uPVC fascias in particular can start to look dull if they’re left too long.
Best practice is to clean fascias once a year, ideally in the spring or summer. If your house is near tall trees or you live in a wetter climate, give them a second clean in autumn too.
A quick wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush is usually all it takes to brighten them back up. For tougher stains, a uPVC cleaner or specialist product can restore their shine.
Soffits sit underneath the fascias and help ventilate your roof space. Because soffit board is more sheltered, they don’t collect as much dirt — but they’re still a haven for cobwebs, dust, and the odd insect nest.
Most homeowners only need to clean soffits once a year alongside the fascia clean.
Wiping them down at the same time as your fascias keeps everything looking uniform, and it’s an easy job once you’ve already got the ladder out.
Gutters are the real workhorses of your roofline. Their entire job is to move rainwater away from your home, but fallen leaves, moss, twigs, and even tennis balls (yes, really!) can block them. Once gutters are blocked, water has nowhere to go but over the edge, down your walls, and eventually into your property.
The best approach is to clean gutters twice a year — once in spring (to clear winter debris) and once in autumn (after the leaves fall).
If your house is surrounded by trees or you’ve had problems before, check them more often. Even a quick visual inspection after heavy rain can save you from bigger issues later.
Here’s an easy way to stay on top of things:
Spring: Clear gutters, check fascias and soffits for winter damage, wash off any algae or dirt
Summer: Light clean if needed, especially after storms. A quick wipe can keep uPVC looking crisp
Autumn: Major gutter clean to remove leaves and moss. Inspect joints and downpipes for blockages
Winter: Keep an eye out for overflowing gutters and ice build-up. Don’t attempt a deep clean in icy conditions — wait for safer weather
You can clean fascias, soffits, and gutters yourself — many people do. All you need is a ladder, a bucket of warm soapy water, a soft brush, and maybe a uPVC cleaner for stubborn marks. For gutters, a gutter scoop or even a gloved hand does the trick.
But working at height isn’t for everyone. If your house has more than one storey, or you’re not comfortable on ladders, it’s safer (and often quicker) to hire a professional. They’ll have the right safety equipment, tools, and cleaning solutions to get the job done thoroughly. Plus, they can spot early signs of damage that you might miss.
Even with a routine, sometimes your roofline will tell you it needs attention:
Green streaks or algae patches on fascias or soffits
Gutters overflowing when it rains
Water staining on brickwork below the gutters
Nests, moss clumps, or visible blockages in the guttering
Damp patches appearing indoors near ceilings or external walls
If you notice any of these, don’t wait until your next scheduled clean — deal with it sooner.
So, how often should you clean fascias, soffits, and gutters? As a simple rule of thumb:
Fascias → once a year
Soffits → once a year
Gutters → twice a year (spring and autumn)
Stay on top of this routine and you’ll not only keep your home looking sharp but also protect it from damp, leaks, and long-term damage.
If your roofline still looks tired after a clean, it may be time to replace your fascias, soffits, or gutters with modern, low-maintenance uPVC products. They’re designed to stay cleaner for longer and require far less upkeep, why not view our complete range at www.plasticbuildingsupplies.com
