The Five Most Common Types of Roof For Your Home

The Five Most Common Types of Roof For Your Home

14 Jan 2023

If you are redesigning your home or constructing a new property, it can help to know what types of roofs are available to you. There is much more to a roof than you might realise but you do have a range of options depending on your needs and what your building. Your roof is there to protect your home but it also enhances the appeal of your home and adds to its style, so it pays to get it right. You might choose one roof type to add more space to the loft, enabling you to convert your loft but you might choose another roof type to blend in with the local area. So, it does help to know what types of roof are available and how they could benefit your home.

Gable Roof

This is one of the most common types of roof but it does have a simple design. With this style, you will have two sides that rise and meet in the middle, creating a triangle shape. In the UK, this is the most traditional type of roof and is almost suitable for all types of homes.

Hip Roof

A hip roof has a slightly different look as it has four sides and no vertical ends. Therefore, when you look at your home from all angles, you will be able to see tiles and roof. All four sides will rise and meet in the middle but this type of roof does need some element of consideration. This is because the large roof means that you will need to think about the type of tile and the colour of your shingles as they will have a big impact on the look of your roof.

Mansard Roof

Taking influence from French architecture, this is a classic style roof. It has four steep slopes at the lower section of the roof which can be either curved or flat before the upper portion has less of a  gradient. This is a popular design because it enables you to make use of the upper part of your home and so, it is perfect for those who might be considering a loft conversion with the aim of adding more space to their home.

Shed Roof

If you prefer a modern look then the shed roof might be the style for you. This is often seen on extensions and porches but is now being seen in modern properties because it has a sleek finish. It takes its look from half of a traditional gable roof although it won’t be as steep. Homes that have this type of roof are eye-catching and add a modern look to your home.

Flat Roof

Many properties that were built during the war were given flat roofs and are often used when construction ground floor extensions. They have improved considerably in previous years and although the name suggests that they are flat, they do have a slow slope to help water drain away slowly.

Choosing the Right Style

Before selecting your roof style, it can help to make several considerations. You will need to think about choosing the right shingles, so it can help to look at other properties in the area. However, you might also want to understand the rules and regulations that are in place. Whatever you choose, getting it right will ensure that your property is adequately protected and looks smart at the same time.

“Very impressed this time around!!! (disappointed with communication and delivery in first lockdown) and left a negative review which I updated after delivery. I can now understand all the good reviews before the pandemic. Still the cheapest by far and the products are spot on. I've just placed another order - Thank you keep up the good work”
